somewhere on the way to Poznan, Poland

It was a long weekend and summer was just getting started. We decided to visit some key cities in Poland by road and see what the beautiful country had to offer for us, travelers. It was a 3 nights and 4 days trip where we covered almost 1,100 km ground.

We started our journey from Berlin. Moved east to Poznań and then towards north to Gdansk, Gdynia which are couple of beautiful cities on the baltic sea. Then we started our journey back to Berlin from north towards west with a stop in Szczecin which is close to the german-polish border. This is a map view of our overall journey.

We started from Berlin where we currently live and moved towards east to Poznań. We did not even realize that we entered Poland via Frankfurt an der Oder (yes, there is another Frankfurt and when I talk to people in east Berlin, they say thats the Frankfurt we know, which other Frankfurt are you talking about?😄).

The river Oder forms the border of 187 km between Germany and Poland and flows for more than 700 km rising from Czech Republic.

Talking about Poznań, it’s a fifth largest city in Poland and has got a lot of history. The old town is one of the best places I have visited so far in Poland. We stayed right behind the old town in a hostel (you can easily find many hostels around this area as a lot of other attractions are nearby). There are restaurants around the center of old town and in the evening it is amazing just walk around that area.

Here are some glimpses of the old town.

Another iconic place we decided to visit was Park Cytadela which is around 20 mins walk from the old town towards north. You can also get some buses which will drop you near the park. It is easy to reach as it is situated near one of the main stations, Poznań Garbary and the river Warta.

Park Cytadela is located on the site of Fort Winiary which was converted into the park in post-war period. It took us at least couple of hours to walk across multiple areas of the park and see The Hero’s monument, Military museum and the sculptures (“The unrecognized ones”).

Here are some pictures from the park

After roaming around in the park for some time, we had enough exercise for our legs and it was time to sit somewhere peaceful and relax in the nature. So, Lake Malta was our choice and it did not let us down 🙂. This is where we ended our day 1 and went back to the hostel after having dinner at one of the restaurants in the old town.

If you are looking for a weekend getaway which is full of history yet modern and close to Berlin, then Poznan can be a best option.

Enjoy! 🙂
